Healthy & Active

Living in a region with abundant natural beauty and a mild climate has very positive effects on the health and happiness of its residents. So much so that Greater Victoria is rated Canada's healthiest and fittest city. Victorians pursue a wide range of outdoor activities all year round and is recognized as having the greatest amount of active leisure time of any major city in Canada. The region's 26 18-hole golf courses are clear proof that Victorians love their leisure time.

Exercise is a daily activity for many residents with 33 per cent of the labour force either walking or biking to work and 17 per cent of trips in the region made on foot, a figure that already exceeds the 15 per cent mark the Capital Regional District set as a goal by 2026. The region also boasts 18 recreation and training centres with excellent, well-attended programs for all ages and interests.

Statistical evidence of Greater Victoria's well-being includes the fact that Victorians have the second longest life expectancy in Canada. The region is also rated second in Canada for the lowest level of overweight people. In a recent survey, 66.1 per cent of residents reported that they were physically or moderately active compared to 57.7 per cent for B.C. overall. Respondents in Greater Victoria consistently report having better overall health and lower risk factors than respondents in Canada. Compared to the rest of Canada, Greater Victoria residents consume more fruits and vegetables, are more physically active, and are more likely to have a medical doctor and a higher perception of health. Victorians also have lower rates of diabetes, obesity, and smoking.

The region's overall good health, general cleanliness of public areas, and pleasantness of restaurants, patios, and pubs is also influenced by the well-supported "No Smoking" bylaw.
