Motion Picture and Video Jobs

Employment in motion picture and video industries increased 33% in Greater Victoria from 2001 to 2006, four times the growth rate of 8% in both BC and Metro Vancouver.

Film production remains less well-developed in Greater Victoria than Metro Vancouver, however. The location quotient of 0.58 for Greater Victoria means there are just over half the number of film jobs in Greater Victoria relative to BC, while Metro Vancouver has nearly 1.5 times as many film jobs as the provincial average.

These employment figures from the Census are for "place of work", meaning they are jobs that have a fixed location in Greater Victoria, regardless of where the worker lives.

Permanent motion picture and video jobs do not represent the full breadth of the film sector, which includes technical professionals who work on location shoots (and therefore have no fixed place of work) and various film-related support services. This industry also includes movie theatres, which clearly have no role in film production.

Number and Value of Film Productions

The number and value of film productions in Greater Victoria declined between 2005 and 2008 both in absolute terms and relative to BC. Since 2005, the number of productions has fallen by 73% and the amount spent on production in Victoria has fallen by 74%. This is in contrast to productions in BC over the period, which grew 23% while the amount spent on production fell slightly by 2%.

Greater Victoria's share of provincial productions is higher than its share of provincial spending, which suggests that relatively lower value productions are done in Victoria or lower valued aspects of production (i.e., shooting but not post-production) relative to other parts of the province, notably Metro Vancouver.

The number and value of film productions provides information on the film industry's contribution to the local economy.
